Choosing Perfect Paint Colors

Inspiration

No one wants to live with a bad paint color in their home.   It’s often a stressful experience to make sure you’re choosing the right one — especially if you’re painting a large room. While a paint color can be changed, if you’ve invested money and time you’ll likely be living with the color you choose for a while. With this in mind, here’s how to avoid making mistakes when picking paint colors.

Don’t Use the Tiny Paper Samples to Make Your Color Choice

In order to choose a paint color, you need to see a decent-sized sample of it on the wall. If you go about picking paint colors by holding up a paint chip to a wall, you run the risk of being surprised or even disappointed once the entire room is that color. A tiny sample simply isn’t a good representation of what a color will look like over a large area.  Plus the chip is printed not painted.

Know That Colors Look Different at Various Times of Day

And on different walls. And at different angles. One of the most mystifying things about picking paint colors is how a color that looks perfect in the morning can suddenly take on a dark, drab tone later in the day. Because of this, take a look at paint samples on your walls at different times of the day. Also, try a color on different walls and in different locations on the same wall to see if you like it everywhere.

Don’t Forget the Decor!

One of the biggest mistakes people make when picking paint colors is moving all of their furniture and decor away from the wall (or walls). Because your furniture and decor will be a part of the room once the walls are painted, it’s important to make sure they don’t clash with your new paint color. After a sample is dry, move everything back to see how you like the color you’re considering.

Dark Rooms and Dark Colors Don’t Mix

Even if you’re a fan of bold, dark colors, make sure to consider the room where the colors will exist. If a room lacks natural light or fixtures that provide ample light to brighten it up, painting the walls dark will make it feel closed in, dreary, and much smaller. Only consider darker shades for well-lit rooms. A lighter paint color will help open up and brighten a room with very little light.
